Saraland started out as Alvarez Station and was incorporated in 1957 with just 125 residents. Today more than 8 in 10 homes are single-family houses, and the city runs its own school system. The high ground is sand that drains well, but the land toward Bayou Sara and the delta stays wet. That split decides how much base work a driveway or a lot needs before any asphalt goes down.
3M Paving and Excavation is based in Grove Hill, and Saraland is about 70 miles straight down US-43. Our second yard, in Robertsdale on the Baldwin County side, is closer still. Here we lay hot mix for asphalt driveways and parking lot paving, then handle sealcoating, patching, crack filling and striping. Call or text (251) 589-9970 and we will come out, look at the job and give you a written quote.

Saraland grew as Mobile spread north in the middle of the last century. The 2020 Census counted 16,171 people, and the 2024 estimate is 16,458. Census survey figures say the median home was built in 1981, and about half went up before 1980. More than a quarter were built in 2000 or later, and nearly 8 in 10 households own their home.
On a new drive, we grade the site so water runs off, then put down the base and compact it. The hot mix goes down next and gets rolled while it is hot. Near a wet creek bottom, the base usually has to be built up more than on sandy high ground. The quote spells out the thickness, the base work and the square footage for your job.
Drives that went in with 1960s and 1970s homes have had a long life in the rain and sun. When the base under one has failed, the drive comes out and gets rebuilt from the ground up. Shared drives and private roads that serve a few homes get the same build. Where trucks use them, private road paving calls for a heavier section, and the quote shows it.
Soil maps around Saraland show two kinds of ground. The higher land is sand that drains well, and some of it drains very fast. Toward Bayou Sara and the delta, the creek bottoms are poorly drained or worse and hold water. Pavement built on that wet ground needs extra care with drainage and base.
The weather station at the Mobile airport averages about 66 inches of rain a year. When water gets under asphalt and softens the base, cracks spread and potholes open. So the first job on any new pavement is grading it to shed water.
On sound pavement, sealcoating and crack filling help keep water out of the surface. Where the base has already failed, asphalt patching cuts out the bad area and rebuilds it. When a drive or lot is worn but still solid underneath, an asphalt overlay puts fresh hot mix on top. We tell you which one your pavement needs after we look at it.
US-43 runs through the middle of town as Saraland Boulevard, and I-65 passes about two miles west. Industrial Parkway and Shelton Beach Road are the other main corridors. Shops, offices, churches and the city's schools all have lots, and each carries a different kind of traffic. A lane where delivery trucks turn needs a heavier section than a row of car stalls.
We plan the work in phases with you so part of the lot can stay in use. A new commercial lot or a new subdivision may need review by the Saraland Planning Commission first. It meets the second Tuesday of each month, so build that into your timeline.
After paving, parking lot striping lays out the stalls, arrows, stop bars and fire lanes. Accessible spaces and access aisles are marked to the 2010 ADA Standards, which federal rules require when a business restripes. For a work yard or a long rural drive, asphalt millings or crush and run can be enough. We deliver both by the load, and we can grade and roll them in place.
That depends on who owns the road in front of your property. Inside the city limits, work in the city right of way takes a City of Saraland right-of-way permit. The city's Building Department also issues land disturbance permits, so ask what your job needs before work starts.
US-43 is a US route, so driveway access onto Saraland Boulevard runs through ALDOT. A new driveway or lot entrance onto it needs an ALDOT turnout permit, form BM-111. The property owner applies for it, and we build the entrance to the rules it sets.
On a county road outside the city, Mobile County Public Works sets the rules. The county allows only reinforced concrete pipe for driveway culverts in its right of way. It also wants a new drive to slope down and away from the road edge for at least eight feet. We do the grading and culvert work that goes with the paving, built to those rules.
