Asphalt millings are recycled asphalt. They come off a road or a lot when the old surface is ground up for resurfacing. We deliver millings from our yard in Grove Hill and our second yard in Robertsdale. Driveways, parking pads, shop yards, farm lanes and timber roads all take them well.
A millings surface sits between a stone drive and hot mix asphalt paving. Every piece still carries old asphalt, so the material knits together under a roller instead of staying loose. The ground under it still has to be shaped to drain. We do the grading and the base work first, then the millings go down and get rolled.

Millings are what comes off a road or a lot when the old asphalt is ground up. The Federal Highway Administration calls it reclaimed asphalt pavement: removed pavement that still holds its asphalt and its rock. A milling machine takes off up to two inches in one pass and loads the millings straight into trucks. The material is then screened and stockpiled for reuse.
The asphalt industry survey run with the Federal Highway Administration counts it every year. In 2024 it found 101.4 million tons of reclaimed asphalt put back to use. More than 99 percent of what comes off the road gets used again. Steady supply is one reason millings work for drives and lots all over south Alabama.
No two loads are exactly alike. Ground material runs finer than asphalt that was broken up and crushed. The rock sizes shift with the job the millings came from. We look at what is in the load before it goes on your drive.
The base carries the load, not the millings. We shape the ground first, cut a crown so water runs off and clean out the ditch line. Soft spots get dug out and filled back. On wet ground a rock base goes down before anything else.
Then the millings go down. Our motor grader pulls them to grade and the roller packs them tight. Federal guidance notes that reclaimed asphalt stockpiled in warm weather can harden up. Clarke County averages about 67 days a year at 90 degrees or better, so the heat helps.
Drainage decides how long the surface lasts. Around Grove Hill the uplands are sandy loam over clay, and the creek bottoms stay wet. Down in Baldwin County the flatwoods ground sits over a high water table and drains slower than the sand looks. Culverts, ditches and grading and drainage work come first on both.
Crush and run packs hard because the stone dust fills the gaps. Millings pack because every piece carries old asphalt and knits under a roller. Federal highway guidance reports that a base blend loses bearing strength once millings pass about a quarter of the mix. So the base goes in as crush and run, and the millings ride on top.
Hot mix asphalt is the finished surface. It is laid hot, rolled and closed up tight, so water runs off instead of through. A millings drive stays a driving surface and never becomes a pavement. When the time comes to upgrade, a rolled millings layer makes a solid base for an asphalt driveway.
