The ridges around Jackson are sandy loam. The soil survey names Smithdale, Boykin and Bama on the high ground, and all three drain well. Sand like that makes a good base. Water moves through it instead of sitting under the pavement.
Step off the ridge and it flips. Clay ground is mixed right in around Jackson. Clay sheds water instead of taking it in. In the creek bottoms and along the river, the soil stays wet long after the rain quits.
So two drives a mile apart can act nothing alike. We look at the ground and the fall of the lot before we quote. A loose sand base and a wet clay flat need different work under the asphalt.
Clarke County maintains about 804 miles of road, and more than 505 of those miles are still dirt or gravel. Plenty of Jackson drives run off roads like that, back through pines to the house. When one turns to ruts and mud, the trouble is usually shape and water, not rock.

US-43 runs north and south past Jackson. State Route 177 loops off it through town as College Avenue and Commerce Street. A lot that opens onto a route like that takes turning traffic all day. Turning traffic is what breaks thin pavement first, at the entrance and along the edges.

Ask before the work starts, because the road authority sets the pipe size and the slope at the shoulder. ALDOT's published minimum for a side drain pipe under a drive is 15 inches. A region can require 18.
