Road paving is our work on private roads, subdivision streets and shared driveways. We build new roads, rebuild worn-out ones and lay overlays where the base is still sound. Each job starts with grade and drainage, then the base, then hot mix asphalt rolled while it is hot. We also come back for crack filling and patching as the road ages.
We pave for the people who own the road. Some are several families sharing one drive off a county road. Others are a subdivision POA, a church, a hunting club, a town or a utility board. We work from our yard in Grove Hill and our second yard in Robertsdale, about 100 miles out.

The people who own it do. A road stays private until the county commission votes to take it into the county road system. Recording a subdivision plat does not make the streets county roads. Until that vote happens, grading, patching and paving stay a private bill.
Counties set their own standards for the roads they will accept. A county does not have to take a road that misses them. If your group hopes to hand the road over one day, ask the county engineer's office what the standards are. We build to the standard you give us.
Clarke County keeps up about 804 miles of road, and over 500 miles of that is still unpaved. The private roads here run off those county roads and serve a few houses and timber land. On the Baldwin County side, they are more often subdivision streets and POA roads. Either way, the road gets measured end to end before we quote it.
A road carries more weight than a driveway, so it gets built heavier. Log trucks, farm equipment, church buses and garbage trucks all run the same strip. We grade the subgrade, then the base goes down and gets compacted. Hot mix asphalt goes on top, rolled hot, with rock or soil wedged against the open edges.
Water is what takes a road apart. Ditches, culverts and drainage pipe go in before the base does, and low spots get built up. The common guidance is a crown of about a quarter inch per foot, which sends rain to the ditch line. South Alabama gets heavy rain, and a road that does not drain will not hold up.
Width matters as much as thickness on a private road. Under the fire code, a fire apparatus access road runs 20 feet wide with 13 feet 6 inches of clearance. A dead end longer than 150 feet needs a place to turn a truck around. Your local fire official decides what applies, so ask before the layout is set.
It depends on the traffic, the grade and how much upkeep you want. A crush and run road costs less to build and takes grading now and then. It washes and rattles on hills and in heavy rain. Hot mix asphalt costs more up front, takes heavy trucks better and sheds water instead of soaking it up.
Asphalt millings sit in the middle. They are recycled asphalt, spread, graded and rolled, and in summer heat they knit back together. On a farm or timber road with a few loads a week, millings beat loose stone. They are not a finished pavement, and they shed some loose material.
We also take on street paving and pavement maintenance for towns, utility boards and school boards. That work gets planned in phases with you so traffic keeps moving. On a subdivision or a church road we do the same, so people can still get in and out. Call or text (251) 589-9970 and we will come look at the road.
