Mobile is an old port city with fast new growth on its west side. Downtown and Midtown sit on a tight grid, with granite curbing and short drives. Past Schillinger Road the subdivisions are newer, and out toward Theodore houses sit back on acreage. The ground shifts just as fast, from well drained ridge sand to wet flats near the river.

Mobile is one of the wettest cities in the country. The weather station at the airport averages about 66 inches of rain a year, and July is the wettest month. Hard freezes are rare, so the paving season runs long here. Rain moves a job, not the thermometer.
The soil map under the city is a patchwork. On the Spring Hill ridge and through west Mobile the subgrade is well drained sand. Closer to the river, the bay and the delta it turns to poorly drained flats and fill. Much of the buildable city is made ground rather than native soil.
So the grade and the drainage come first. We shape the site so water runs off the pavement instead of standing on it. Then the base goes down and gets compacted, and the hot mix is laid and rolled while it is hot. On low ground near the bay, drainage decides how long the job lasts.
Downtown and the Midtown historic districts are their own kind of job. Oakleigh Garden, Old Dauphin Way, Leinkauf and Ashland Place have narrow lots, old brick streets and granite curbing. The city keeps its own standards for curbing and sidewalk in those districts. Drives are short there, and the tie-in at the street has to sit flush and drain.
Live oaks are the other Midtown and Spring Hill problem. Roots lift a driveway from underneath and break the surface into plates. Trees in the city right of way go through the city urban forester before anything is cut or dug. Where roots have broken a drive up, the fix is usually a rebuild rather than a patch.
Out past Schillinger Road, and in the county toward Theodore and Semmes, the drives run long. Many start as a crush and run drive and get paved later once the base is settled and draining. A long drive needs a crown, a ditch that carries water away, and a culvert sized by whoever owns the road.
Airport Boulevard is the main retail spine across Midtown and west Mobile. Rangeline Road and Halls Mill Road at Tillmans Corner carry the big box stores, warehouses and truck traffic. Schillinger Road keeps adding shopping centers and schools. Those lots wear in different ways, and the section under them should match the traffic.
We do parking lot paving for shops, offices, restaurants, churches, schools and apartment properties. Car stalls, truck lanes and dumpster pads do not need the same build. The quote spells out what each area gets. We plan the work in phases with you so a business or a church can keep operating.
Once the asphalt has cooled we come back for striping the lot. Accessible spaces and access aisles get marked to the 2010 ADA Standards. Fire lanes, stop bars and arrows go down at the same time. Sealcoating and crack filling come later, on a schedule that fits how hard the lot works.
It depends on who owns the road at your property line. Inside the city limits, work in the right of way goes through the City of Mobile right of way section. On a county road, Mobile County Public Works issues the permit. On a state or US route like Government Street or Moffett Road, the ALDOT Mobile area rules apply.
Three west Mobile areas voted into the city in 2023, so a county street may be a city street now. The city sets a minimum driveway pipe size, and both it and the county want sloped safety headwalls on both ends. Mobile County asks the drive to slope half an inch per foot away from the road edge. That fall has to carry for at least eight feet.
The city's residential right of way form matters most for asphalt work. It lists asphalt in the right of way as a non-standard material that needs approval. A short stormwater form covers a single family lot up to 4,000 square feet of disturbance and new hard surface. Bigger jobs need a full land disturbance permit, so ask the city before the work starts.
