The USDA soil maps put a series named Robertsdale right under this town. It is rated somewhat poorly drained, with a water table that can sit about 15 inches down. Ground like that heaves and pumps under a thin drive, so the subgrade and the ditch have to be built right.
The ground is not the same from one lot to the next here. One parcel is fast draining sand like Norfolk, Orangeburg, Ruston or Magnolia, and the next is slow, wet Grady. Somewhere else it is deep loose sand like Lakeland or Wadley, which will not hold a crown. Each one calls for different base work, so we read the ground before we price the asphalt.
Rain settles the rest. The weather station in Robertsdale averages 67.32 inches of rain a year over 1991 to 2020. About 21 of those days bring an inch or more, and July is the wettest month at 8.14 inches. Pavement here lives or dies on where the water goes, so the grading and drainage work comes first.
It depends on whose road you are tying into. AL-59, US-90 and AL-104 are state routes, so ALDOT permits those turnouts. ALDOT counts paving an unpaved drive or resurfacing one as the same thing as a brand new entrance. It also sets a 15 inch minimum on side drain pipe, and a region can require 18 inches.
Inside the city limits, the Robertsdale building and engineering department issues the culvert and driveway permit. Its form wants pipe long enough for the drive width plus a two foot shoulder on each side. It calls for a sloped end and a headwall on each end. A drive over 50 feet also needs a clean out box. City reviews run seven to fourteen business days on average, so it pays to start that early.
Outside the city limits it is Baldwin County, which sorts driveways by what they serve. One house is a minor residential driveway, and a drive to a field or timberland is an agriculture driveway. Two to four lots is a major residential driveway. A commercial drive, or one serving five or more lots, goes through planning and zoning. We build the turnout to the standard that road calls for.
Robertsdale has plenty of buildings that need a real lot. Schools, churches, a community college campus, the shops along AL-59 and the county coliseum and fairgrounds all sit on pavement. Those lots take the same base and drainage work a driveway takes, only more of it.
The city's land use rules shape a lot before any asphalt goes down. A parking space has to be at least 10 feet wide and 19 feet deep. A two-way aisle has to be at least 24 feet. No stall may force a car to back onto a public street. Off-street parking areas have to be surfaced to the city's specifications, with one and two family homes and mobile homes the exception.
For a new commercial build, the city wants a full site plan with a grading plan in it. We work in that order too: grade for the water, compact the base, then lay the hot mix and roll it hot. A church, a school or a shop cannot close for a week, so we plan the work in phases with you. Once the asphalt has cured we come back for the stall layout and striping, including accessible spaces and access aisles.
We come down from Grove Hill on US-43, pick up I-65 and I-165, then run I-10 east across the Bayway. AL-59 south off the interstate drops us into Robertsdale, about 108 road miles from the home yard. The Robertsdale yard on the Baldwin County side is the other end of that run. It is why this half of the service area gets steady attention.
From Robertsdale, Foley and Fairhope are both about 13 road miles, Daphne about 18 and Gulf Shores about 21. Bay Minette is about 26 miles and Mobile about 30. Mileage matters on a paving job. Hot mix has to reach the site hot, and the haul is part of the cost.
