Asphalt repair and patching fixes the part of a driveway or lot that has failed, without repaving all of it. We cut the bad area out and rebuild the base where it gave way. Then a hot mix patch goes in and gets compacted, and cracks get filled with hot-pour crack filler. We work from our yard on US-43 in Grove Hill and from our second yard in Robertsdale.
Asphalt patching holds up when the pavement around the failed spot is still sound. Once cracking has spread across a whole section, a patch will not last. Potholes start under the surface. Federal highway guidance lists water, traffic, freeze and thaw, and weak support as the causes. Rain does most of it here, with Clarke County near 60 inches a year and Mobile at 66. Freezing comes at night and does not last, so water and a soft base do the damage.
A shovel of cold patch tamped into a hole is a stopgap. It fills the hole without touching what caused it. Our patches start by squaring the failed area out to sound pavement and hauling the broken material off. Federal guidance calls that one of the best pothole repairs, short of full removal and replacement.
The base gets checked next, and rebuilt where it is wet, soft or too thin. The Asphalt Institute says a pavement edge needs an aggregate or soil wedge behind it. Where that shoulder washed away, the edge breaks off, so we put crush and run back. Where water stands on a drive or a lot, the repair needs drainage and grading work with it.
Hot-pour crack filler goes into cracks on pavement that is otherwise sound. The crack is blown out and dried, then filled with hot rubberized material. The federal manual of practice puts crack filling at cracks up to about an inch wide. A hairline crack is too tight for the material to get into.
Crack sealing and crack filling are not the same job. The manual splits them by how much a crack moves through the year. Sealing puts specialized material into cracks that open and close, and filling puts ordinary material into cracks that barely move. Most driveway and parking lot cracks are the second kind.
The manual puts crack sealing at 45 to 65 degrees, in spring or fall. Cooler pavement holds cracks open, so more material goes in. Winters are mild here, so that window stays open a long time. Cracks also get filled before sealcoating, since sealer does not fill a crack.
A pothole at a lot entrance gets hit by every vehicle that comes in. Broken pavement at a dumpster pad, a drive lane or a walkway turns into a trip hazard and a complaint. We cut those areas out, rebuild what is under them and patch with hot mix.
We repair lots from Clarke County down to Mobile and Baldwin County. Lot work gets planned in phases with you. A church lot can be done between Sundays, and a shop can keep one entrance open. We mark the failed areas and put the phases in the quote.
Patching buys years on a lot whose base is still sound. When failures are spread across the lot, an overlay makes more sense than chasing one hole at a time. Either way, the lot needs parking lot striping again once the surface is ready.
