Thomasville sits at the north end of Clarke County, with US-43 running straight through it. The older part of town is a tight grid of short blocks. The dirt around Thomasville is not one thing. Some ridges here are sandy loam, and rain soaks straight through. Other ridges are clay, and the USDA soil survey puts them in its slower draining groups.
One clay soil mapped around town formed over the sandstone and buhrstone of the Tallahatta beds. Its official description calls it very slowly permeable. Another soil on these ridges is shallow and cobbly, so rock turns up close to the surface.
Down in the creek bottoms the ground is wet and poorly drained instead. Two drives a mile apart can need two different sections. We set the fall and build the base to suit the dirt we find, then pave.
A house on one of the old town streets usually has a short drive and a parking pad. The work there is the grade, a clean edge and a flush tie in at the concrete apron. Where a street is narrow, a turnaround saves backing out into traffic.
Past the city limits it is a different job. Clarke County keeps about 804 miles of road, and just over 505 of those miles are dirt or gravel. Plenty of drives off them run several hundred feet back through the pines. A drive off a dirt road often needs a pipe at the ditch line first.
A drive like that can stay gravel or crush and run, or get paved once the base is right. Log trucks, tractors and loaded trailers call for a heavier section than a car. We measure it, look at the rock, and tell you which way makes sense.
US-43 carries the through traffic and the log trucks past Thomasville. Businesses on it park customers out front, so those lots take the wear first. Cracked stalls, faded lines and a pothole at the entrance are the usual calls.
The South Thomasville Industrial Park sits on the other end of that same traffic. A lot with delivery trucks and a dumpster pad needs a heavier section than a car park. We build parking lots for businesses and churches the same way: grade, base, then hot mix rolled hot.
Thomasville runs its own city school system, and there is a community college campus in town. A school, a church or a shop cannot close the lot for a week. We plan the work in phases with you, then stripe the stalls once the pavement is ready.
That depends on the road you are tying into. US-43, AL-5 and AL-154 are state routes, so a turnout on them goes through ALDOT. ALDOT counts paving an existing gravel drive as a new entrance, permit and all.
The ALDOT permit manual puts a side drain pipe at 15 inches or larger, and a region can require 18. It also calls for sloped end sections or sloped paved headwalls on a drive pipe. We build to what the road owner requires.
A county road goes through the Clarke County Engineer's office in Grove Hill, which keeps every county road and bridge. A street inside the city goes through the city. Ask before the work starts, and we do the culvert and ditch work to match.
