Parking lot striping is what makes a lot work once the pavement is down. We mark stalls, arrows, stop bars, crosswalks and fire lanes. We restripe lots where the paint has worn off. Some call it parking lot painting. Striping is the last step on a new parking lot. It is also its own job on pavement that has been down for years.
Faded lines cost you parking. Cars drift over the stalls and the drive lanes get tight. A restripe puts the layout back, and it is the chance to fix what never worked. If the lot is getting sealcoating, the sealer goes down first and the lines go on top. We stripe for businesses, churches, schools, apartments and offices.

Paint wears where tires turn and where cars park every day. Sun, rain and sweeping take the rest. Most lots reach a point where drivers cannot read the stalls. A lot where drivers make their own rows is past due for a restripe.
The other trigger is work on the pavement. A lot that was just sealed or overlaid comes back blank and needs the whole layout again. A lot that had potholes and failed patches rebuilt needs its markings put back.
Restriping is also when the accessible parking rules come into play. The Justice Department has published guidance on restriping lots. It says a business that restripes a lot has to provide accessible spaces under the ADA Standards. A blank lot is the easy time to get the count and the aisles right.
The 2010 ADA Standards set the numbers, and we mark the lot to them. A lot with 25 spaces or fewer needs at least one accessible space. The count climbs with the size of the lot. One in every six accessible spaces, or fraction of six, has to be van accessible.
An accessible car space is 96 inches wide at a minimum. A van space is 132 inches wide, or 96 inches beside a 96 inch access aisle. The access aisle is 60 inches wide at a minimum. It runs the full length of the space and gets marked so drivers do not park in it.
Two more items matter. The space and the aisle have to be close to flat, with no slope steeper than 1:48. Grading and paving have to be right before the paint. The sign at each space sits at least 60 inches above the ground, measured to the bottom. Alabama law lets that sign show the fine for a first offense.
We stripe lots around Grove Hill and Clarke County. We also run south to Mobile, Baldwin County and the Gulf Coast. Our second yard in Robertsdale puts the Eastern Shore and the beach towns a short drive away. One company handles the pavement and the lines, including asphalt paving.
Paint needs a clean, dry surface and the right weather. The state highway specification keeps paint off wet pavement and out of the rain. It calls for a pavement temperature of 45 degrees and rising. Cold is rarely what stops paint down here. Rain is. Mobile averages about 66 inches a year, and July is the wettest month.
New asphalt gets time to cure before permanent markings go down. Alabama's highway specification has asphalt cure 14 calendar days before high build paint is applied. A private lot is not a highway, so we set the striping date when the paving is scheduled. On a lot that stays open, we stripe in sections and keep cars off the fresh lines.
