Topsoil is the dark layer on top. It holds the organic matter, and it is what grass and plants root in. It is also soft, so it is the wrong material to build on.
Fill dirt comes from under that layer. It is mostly clay, silt and sand with little organic matter in it, so it packs tight and holds a grade. Select fill is fill picked for its makeup, for pads and drives that have to carry weight.
Most jobs take both. Fill dirt brings the grade up to where it belongs, and topsoil caps it anywhere grass has to grow. Ordering topsoil for a job that needed fill is the common mistake. It turns into a low spot a year later.
Dirt is sold by the cubic yard and delivered by the truckload. A tandem dump truck load commonly falls in the 10 to 16 cubic yard range. It moves with the truck and the material.
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Spread 3 inches deep, it covers about 100 square feet. At 4 inches it covers about 80.
We deliver around Grove Hill and Clarke County, north to Thomasville and south to Jackson. Loads run down to Mobile and across to Baldwin County. The uplands around Grove Hill are sandy loam over clay. The creek bottoms and river flats stay wet most of the year. Down on the Baldwin County side the ground is flat, and the water table sits high. Those coastal soils hold water instead of draining it off. A pad there often has to come up before anything gets built.
Fill holds when it goes down in layers and gets compacted as it goes. Highway specifications work in layers about 6 inches thick. The ground under pavement also has to be clear of topsoil and vegetation. Dirt dumped deep and left loose settles, and the dip comes back.
Where standing water is the real problem, dirt alone will not fix it. The grade has to shed water to a ditch, a swale or a pipe. That is the same work that goes in ahead of a new asphalt driveway or a church or business parking lot.
