A new asphalt driveway starts with the ground under it. We grade the site so water runs off, then build and compact the base. Hot mix asphalt goes down last and gets rolled while it is hot. Rain here runs 60 to 66 inches a year, so the base and drainage decide how long a drive lasts.

Clarke County maintains about 800 miles of road, and roughly 500 of those miles are still dirt or gravel. Plenty of driveways off them are gravel or crush and run too. If the drive holds its shape and the rock under it is sound, we can pave over it. A rutted drive with soft spots needs that base rebuilt first.
A driveway on bare ground is more work. We strip the topsoil and grass, cut to grade, then bring the drive up with base rock. The rock gets compacted in layers, and we shape the crown before any asphalt goes down. Turnarounds and extra parking pads get built the same way.
An old asphalt drive that is breaking up gets torn out and rebuilt. If the base under it is sound, an asphalt overlay costs less than a tear out. We tell you which one your drive is after we look at it.
That depends on the ground under it and on what drives on it. The Asphalt Institute's magazine puts an ordinary home driveway at 3 inches of asphalt over an aggregate base. The other option it gives is 4 inches of asphalt laid full depth on a prepared subgrade. For that base it recommends 6 to 8 inches of compacted crushed aggregate.
Heavier traffic calls for a heavier section. A drive that only carries cars is built lighter than one that takes log trucks or a loaded farm trailer. The rock under the asphalt matters as much as the asphalt itself. Alabama highway specifications call that layer crushed aggregate base, and a crew here calls it crush and run.

Around Grove Hill the ridges run to well drained sandy loam over clay. Water soaks through the sand and stops at the clay. A drive with no fall on it stays soft underneath. Off the ridge the bottoms stay wet, and Baldwin County sits on flat sand over a high water table.
Asphalt industry guidance puts the cross slope at 2 percent or more, so water runs off instead of standing. On a long drive that means a crown down the middle and a ditch on one or both sides. Where the drive crosses a low spot or a ditch line, a pipe goes under it. We do that culvert and drainage work before the asphalt goes down.
Where a driveway ties into a public road, the road owner sets the rules. US-43 and US-84 through Grove Hill are state routes, so a turnout there needs an ALDOT permit. ALDOT counts paving an existing gravel drive as a new entrance, and its side drain pipe starts at 15 inches. A county road goes through the county engineer, and a street in town goes through the city.
